In Goa the waste is generally collected by the Muncipalities and Panchayats authorities. The disposal of waste in Goa is governed by theMunicipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000and the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1996, and Rules of 1997.
The huge proportion of waste generated daily coupled with the fact that opposition from locals to provide land for treatment facilities has caused the waste to be disposed unscientifically and to be thrown on streets, in rivers etc.
Goa generates about 450-500 MT of Solid Waste Daily with about 60- 70 % of the same being Bio degradable. However very less implementation of Segregation at Source leads to issues with foul odour and treatment.
